NEW YORK: Human Rights Watch (HRW) has declined a donation from comedian Aziz Ansari and several other performers who took part in the Riyadh Comedy Festival, citing ethical concerns. The two-week festival, held in Saudi Arabia from September 26 to October 9, featured well-known international comedians including Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Louis CK, and Pete Davidson.
Aziz Ansari had publicly announced that he would donate part of his performance fee to Human Rights Watch and Reporters Without Borders. HRW, however, rejected the offer. Joey Shea, HRW’s researcher for Saudi Arabia, appreciated the gesture but urged the comedians to use their voices to advocate for detained Saudi activists.
Arvind Ganesan, HRW’s head of economic justice and rights, said the organization could not accept funds that might compromise its principles. He added that the group’s independence was vital to maintaining credibility in its work on human rights issues.
The decision came after public debate over whether international artists should perform in Saudi Arabia given its record on freedom of expression and treatment of dissent. During an appearance on a talk show, host Jimmy Kimmel questioned Ansari’s participation in the event. Ansari responded that he hoped his presence would encourage positive conversations and cultural understanding.
While HRW declined the donation, the episode has renewed discussion on how artists and rights groups engage with countries facing global criticism over governance and human rights practices.
