Muhammad Yunus Dismisses Reports of Violence Against Hindus as Indian “Fake News”

Dhaka: Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus has denied claims of communal violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, calling them false and politically motivated. He said the reports circulated by sections of Indian media were fabricated to create religious tension and harm Bangladesh’s international reputation.

Yunus stated that there have been no recent incidents of violence targeting the Hindu community. He urged journalists to verify facts before publishing and warned against the spread of misinformation that inflames communal sensitivities. “There is no violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. These are fake stories being spread by Indian media for political purposes,” he said.

His remarks followed a wave of social media posts and television reports in India alleging attacks on Hindu households and temples. The Bangladeshi government has not reported any such incidents. Local community leaders also confirmed that no large-scale violence had taken place.

Observers noted that Yunus’s statement comes at a time when political relations between India and Bangladesh remain delicate. Analysts say exaggerated or false reporting on communal issues can strain cross-border harmony and deepen mistrust.

Yunus called for responsible journalism and regional cooperation to prevent misinformation campaigns. He said South Asia’s shared future depends on promoting peace, truth, and mutual respect among communities.
