Leaders Sign Gaza Ceasefire Deal Amid Questions Over Future Governance

Sharm el-Sheikh: Global leaders gathered in Egypt to witness the signing of a Gaza ceasefire deal mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and Turkiye. The agreement, signed under the leadership of United States President Donald Trump, aims to end two years of devastating conflict that left over 67,000 Palestinians dead and much of Gaza in ruins.

Trump called the accord “a new and beautiful day” and said Gaza’s reconstruction would depend on its demilitarization, a demand long pressed by Israel. The deal opens the way for humanitarian aid and rebuilding, though questions remain about who will govern Gaza in the post-war period.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi welcomed the ceasefire as an important step but warned that true peace would remain out of reach without the creation of an independent Palestinian state. The conflict displaced thousands and destroyed entire neighborhoods, leaving many without water or shelter.

The United States proposed a “Board of Peace” to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction, with names like Tony Blair and Jared Kushner reportedly under consideration. Critics said such an arrangement lacks transparency and Palestinian representation. They urged that any rebuilding effort include local leadership to ensure legitimacy and accountability.

While the ceasefire offers temporary relief, observers say the test will lie in whether it delivers justice, reconstruction, and self-determination for the people of Gaza.
