Sikkim Issues Advisory on Respectful Depiction of Religious Deities in Tattoos

Gangtok: The Sikkim Ecclesiastical Department has issued an advisory urging tattoo artists and enthusiasts to respect religious sentiments when depicting deities or sacred symbols. The directive follows objections raised during the recent International Tattoo Convention held in the state, where some designs were viewed as offensive for placing divine figures below the waist.

The department stated that such representations hurt the sentiments of believers and disregard the sanctity associated with religious imagery. It appealed to participants, artists, and organisers to exercise sensitivity toward cultural and spiritual values. The advisory emphasised that while artistic expression is welcome, it must not cross into disrespect or irreverence.

Officials said the move was not intended to restrict creativity but to ensure that faith-based symbols receive appropriate treatment in public art. The department also reminded event organisers to brief participants on local customs before showcasing designs.

Observers view this step as part of a growing trend of state-level initiatives to balance freedom of expression with religious respect. Similar measures have been seen in other parts of India where sacred imagery has been used commercially or artistically in controversial ways.

The Sikkim government’s message highlights the need for cultural awareness in artistic platforms that draw diverse participants. It encourages artists to engage with local communities and traditions before incorporating sacred elements into their work.
