Kolkata, Dec. 14: Three people, including a woman, were killed and about 30 others were injured in an accident that occurred at Burdwan railway station platform on Wednesday.
As passengers were waiting at a platform of Burdwan railway station, a large metal overhead water tank fell on them, officials said. The tank is said to be 133 years old.
The three deceased were identified as Sonaram Tudu, Kanti Bahadur and Mafeeza Khatun, a railway official said. The railways announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, Rs. 50,000 each to seriously injured people, and Rs. 5,000 to those who suffered mild injuries. According to a senior officer of the West Bengal Police, an FIR is being lodged in connection with the accident and they would soon start an investigation into it.
Three railway employees have been suspended after the accident, an Eastern Railway official said.
