Hyderabad, Feb. 4: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has urged Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy not to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the state.
A delegation led by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind Telangana and Andhra Pradesh president Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed met the Chief Minister at the State Secretariat on Saturday.
The delegation told Revanth Reddy that Jamiat and most of secular minded organisations and intellectuals are of the view that a large section of people may be denied citizenship after implementation of CAA. They believe that citizenship will be determined by the CAA.
The Chief Minister was informed that West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have already decided not to implement the CAA. The delegation requested him to announce that CAA will not be implemented in Telangana.
The delegation explained to the Chief Minister the problems faced by the Muslim community. It also urged him to implement the promises made by the Congress party in the recent elections. It noted that some promises have been fulfilled but there is need to implement other promises.
According to Jamiat leaders, the Chief Minister thanked Jamiat along with other organisations for their efforts for the Congress party’s victory. He hoped that they will continue their support to Congress for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections to defeat communal forces.
When the delegation drew the attention of the conspiracies of the communal forces in the state, Revanth Reddy assured that they will not be allowed to get a foothold in the state. He said the Congress government would carry all sections of people and treat them equally.
The Chief Minister was urged to deal firmly with those insulting religious personalities or spreading hatred among communities. It demanded fast-track courts to try such individuals and organisations.
The Jamiat leaders urged the Chief Minister to protect four percent reservation for backward sections among Muslims in education and employment. They recalled that late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had announced reservation on a representation by the Jamiat in May 2004. As the matter is currently pending in the Supreme Court, the delegation requested the Chief Minister to accord top priority to it to protect the quota.
