Religion-based citizenship law brought to target Muslims: Owaisi

Hyderabad, April 2: The purpose of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was to create a religion-based citizenship law to further victimise Muslims, said All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday.

The Hyderabad MP posted on social media that the people for whom CAA was apparently made are not benefiting from it.

“This was obvious to anyone who has made an effort to read CAA. The purpose was to create a religion-based citizenship law so that Muslims could be victimised further,” wrote Owaisi.

He believes that a religion-neutral asylum law would have genuinely helped any Hindu refugee who had come to India due to persecution.

Owaisi was reacting to a report from West Bengal that a BJP worker couldn’t apply under CAA as the portal asked him for documents to prove that he indeed came from Bangladesh.

Through another post, Owaisi condemned the demands by BJP leaders for changes in the Constitution. He mentioned that after Hegde, another BJP candidate said that the Constitution needs to be changed and ‘tough decisions’ are needed.

The AIMIM chief demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain what changes they want in the Constitution. “Do they want the status of states to be reduced, as was done with Kashmir? Will reservation be ended on the basis of caste? Doesn’t Modi ji want to replace parliamentary democracy with presidential democracy?” asked the MP.

“If the BJP and other Sanghis are so irritated with the Constitution then why do they want to gain power under the Constitution?” wrote Owaisi.

He also dared the BJP government to take back land occupied by China. “Taking back land from China is also a tough decision, and there is no need to change the Constitution for that, it is just a matter of courage and will power,” he added.
