In a significant diplomatic move, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have agreed to strengthen cooperation in combating terrorism, following recent tensions between the two countries involving tit-for-tat airstrikes on alleged terrorist hideouts.
President Raisi, the first foreign head of state to visit Pakistan after its general elections in February, was warmly received by Prime Minister Sharif at the Prime Minister House, where he inspected the Guard of Honour.
During their discussions, both leaders affirmed their commitment to jointly combat terrorism, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.
Furthermore, they explored avenues to enhance trade and communication links between Iran and Pakistan. President Raisi emphasized that the current bilateral trade volume was insufficient, and both nations have set a target to boost trade to $10 billion.
Prime Minister Sharif stressed the importance of strengthening ties between Pakistan and Iran despite existing challenges. He highlighted the extensive discussions held with President Raisi covering religious, cultural, diplomatic, investment, and security matters.
Expressing optimism about the future, Mr. Sharif envisioned progress and prosperity for both countries, especially along their shared border, fostering opportunities for trade and business.
The leaders also participated in a symbolic gesture for Earth Day by planting a tree at the Prime Minister House.
President Raisi’s visit marks a significant step toward mending relations following tensions earlier this year. The cordial discussions and engagements are expected to further solidify the longstanding ties between Iran and Pakistan.
President Raisi’s agenda includes meetings with other key figures in Pakistan, such as President Asif Ali Zardari, Senate Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, and Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq. Additionally, he plans to visit Lahore and Karachi to engage with provincial leadership.
The visit underscores the historical, cultural, and religious bonds between Iran and Pakistan and presents an important opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including trade, connectivity, energy, agriculture, and people-to-people contacts.
