Around 25 students of Islamic theology have completed the LLB course from Markaz Law College in Kozhikode, Kerala – a first of its kind in India.
It’s a dream come true for the nonagenarian visionary Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, popularly known as the Grand Mufti, who has established ‘Knowledge City.’ It is a collective figure of multiple essentials – Education, Culture, Health, and Entrepreneurship, spearheaded by the Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya.
The Markaz Law College is the first project launched under the Knowledge City. It is affiliated with the University of Calicut and is recognised by the Bar Council of India.
Of the total intake of 50 in undergraduate law course, half strength is of general students from all the communities on merit basis. The other half is from the Islamic seminaries (madrasa). Prior to admission in the law course, these theology students pass out Moulvi course from the seminaries like Jamia Markaz.
Since its inception in 2014, five batches of 5 years LLB, four batches of 3 years LLB courses have passed out successfully from the Markaz Law College. Around 300 students graduated from the college so far are into the legal profession. Some are practicing in the Supreme Court too. Many have gone for higher studies in the US, UK, Italy, etc.
The college started a post-graduation course LLM in Constitutional Law and Commercial Law recently, and one batch passed out this year. It is designed to mould a new breed of competent and socially committed lawyers capable of operating legal matters effectively, by imparting value-based legal education.
