A Kannada Inspector’s Fondness for Urdu

Vijayapura, July 12: An Urdu daily hanging at the door of subject inspector Ashok Limakar’s chamber will definitely surprise anybody. At a time when those with Urdu as their mother tongue are hardly able to read and write the language, let alone read a newspaper, a Kannadiga’s keenness for Urdu is delightful.

Inspector Ashok’s acquaintance with Urdu is just five years old. His motive to understand the problems of Urdu schools in a better way brought him closer to the language. It was necessary to interact with students and staff in their own language he felt, and thus began to learn Urdu. With the help of an Urdu teacher, he was able to read and write in a short span of time.

A regular reader of Daily Salar, Ashok Limakar says the standard of government Urdu schools is not up to the mark. Urdu-knowing civil society members should also volunteer to improve the quality of schools rather than totally relying on the department, feels the inspector.

I get the newspaper to my office daily, and carry it home in the evening to read it thoroughly, he says. The news coverage is similar to other language dailies, and I enjoy reading it, he said.

Limakar feels that Urdu teachers should take keen interest in performing their duties well and leave no stone unturned to shape the future of Urdu students. As an inspector he is doing his best
