Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, June 28: On Thursday, the town of Soorwal in the Sawai Madhopur district witnessed an extraordinary wedding that stood out for its simplicity and adherence to Islamic traditions. The nuptials of Azra Tabassum and Mohammad Saif broke away from the typical extravagance associated with Indian weddings.
There was no groom’s procession (baraat), no dowry, and no elaborate feast hosted by the bride’s family. The ceremony was devoid of music, large gatherings, and other expensive rituals often seen in weddings where lakhs and crores are spent.
The bride, Azra Tabassum, daughter of Mohammad Ansar Oghwan, and the groom, Mohammad Saif, son of Zafir Ali Oghwan, were married, at the Ishaat-e-Islam Mosque in Soorwal following the Zohr Salat (afternoon prayer).
Both families believe that Nikah (marriage) in Islam should be simple and easy, free from societal pressures of dowry, baraat, and other elaborate rituals. This shared belief led to their wedding in a modest and traditional Islamic manner.
Mohammad Ansar, a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, had similarly married his son Mohammad Waseef, a member of SIO, without any baraat or dowry in 2022.
Prior to the Nikah, Maulana Sarfaraz Falahi addressed the attendees, explaining the Sunnah (traditional) method of Nikah and urging them to stand against the societal evils of dowry and extravagant weddings.
The ceremony was officiated by Qazi Mohammad Shadab, son of City Qazi Nisarullah. Following the Nikah, the groom’s side distributed sweets to all present.
In accordance with Islamic tradition, the groom’s family gifted jewelry worth ₹26,400 to the bride as Mehr, an obligatory gift in Islam.
Tausif Ahmed, the bride’s brother, noted the presence of several notable community members at the ceremony, including Mohammad Dawood Khan, Azam Ali, Zubair Ahmed, Abdulrazzaq Oghwan, Usman Sheikh, Aslam Master, Mohammad Akib, Mohammad Ali Sheikh, Arif Ali, Faryad Oghwan, Mohammad Asif, Farid Diamond, Mohammad Uzair, Abdul Bari, Jameel Ahmed, Nafees Diamond, and Riyaz Ahmed, among others.
This wedding serves as a significant example of how simplicity and adherence to tradition can prevail over societal expectations and extravagance, highlighting the importance of returning to the core values of marriage in Islam.
