Abdul Gani Atlaswala Remembered for Building Institutions and Generations

MUMBAI: Community leaders, educationists, philanthropists, and social workers gathered at Ansar Hall in South Mumbai to pay tribute to the late Alhaaj Abdul Gani Atlaswala. The condolence meeting highlighted his lifelong service to education, healthcare, and community welfare.

Speakers recalled his selfless philanthropy, often carried out quietly without seeking attention. Sarfaraz Arzoo, Editor of The Hindustan Urdu Daily, said Atlaswala inspired generations through silent giving. Others stressed his ability to combine charity with political awareness. Naseem Siddiqui, former Chairman of the Maharashtra State Minority Commission, noted his active role in supporting secular political alternatives in Mumbai.

Atlaswala’s strongest legacy lies in institution building. He was a founding trustee and general secretary of Anjuman Khairul Islam, which now runs over 70 schools and colleges and four orphanages serving more than 1,300 orphans. He also supported the Khair e Ummat Trust to establish a diagnostic center for affordable healthcare. In education, he guided the creation of schools for displaced families and encouraged parent participation through Tanzeem-e-Walidain.

During crises such as the Bhiwandi and Mumbai riots, he personally helped families rebuild homes and supported orphans, many of whom went on to become professionals. Leaders remembered him as a mentor who guided youth and activists with humility and faith.

Even near his 100th year, Atlaswala remained engaged with schools, mosques, and trusts. His legacy continues through the work of his family and the institutions he helped build.
