Lucknow: Abdullah Azam, former MLA and son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, has secured major legal relief after a Sessions Court in Rampur acquitted him in a case related to allegedly obtaining two passports with different dates of birth.
The court set aside a seven-year prison sentence earlier imposed by a Special MP/MLA Court and cleared Abdullah Azam of all charges in the case.
The matter began in July 2019 when BJP leader and Rampur MLA Akash Saxena filed a complaint at the Civil Lines Police Station. The complaint alleged that Abdullah Azam had acquired two separate passports at different times using different birth dates and had used those documents as identity proof.
Following an FIR and trial proceedings, the Special MP/MLA Court delivered its verdict in December 2025, convicting Abdullah Azam and sentencing him to seven years in prison. He was subsequently sent to jail.
Abdullah Azam challenged the verdict before the Sessions Court. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court reserved its judgment on May 25, 2026. On May 29, it pronounced its decision, overturning the conviction and quashing the sentence.
According to reports, the prosecution had sought enhancement of the punishment. The Sessions Court rejected that request and ruled in favour of Abdullah Azam.
His counsel, Nasir Sultan, welcomed the verdict and said the appellate court found sufficient grounds to overturn the earlier conviction.
The ruling comes as a relief for Azam Khan and his family. However, Abdullah Azam is unlikely to secure immediate release as multiple other cases against him remain pending before various courts.
The judgment marks an important development in one of the most closely watched legal cases involving the Samajwadi Party leader’s family in recent years.
