Agra: Local marble artisans in Agra are expressing pride after a handcrafted chess set from their city was presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Craftsmen describe the gesture as a strong boost for their trade and a moment of global recognition for their skills.
Artisan Umar, who has worked with marble for nearly twenty years, said the gift marked an important point for traditional Indian craftsmanship. He explained that each chess set requires ten to fifteen days of steady handwork. Workshops source stone from Vietnam, Bangladesh and Italy. Skilled workers then carve, polish and assemble the pieces in Agra’s small and medium units.
Umar said the gesture has encouraged workers who often struggle with fluctuating demand. He expects more orders from abroad and stronger support for small workshops. He added that artisans look forward to more national attention on their work.
Exporter Adnan Sheikh said the gift showcases India’s cultural confidence. His export house ships marble artefacts to Europe and West Asia. He said more enquiries have arrived since news of the gift reached international buyers. He expects long term growth for the local industry. He also said the choice of a handcrafted item reflects the role of artisans in cultural diplomacy.
Many small workers in Agra depend on seasonal orders. The new attention has given them hope for stable income and expanded markets. Several workshop owners are preparing new designs to meet expected demand from overseas clients. They say the rise in visibility has created new energy in the local handicraft lanes.
