Communal Strain Deepens in Ahilyanagar Village as Dargah Dispute Spurs Boycott Fears

New Delhi: Tension in Ahilyanagar’s Guha village continues to rise as a dispute over the historic Hazrat Ramzan Shah Baba dargah disrupts social relations between Hindu and Muslim residents. The site, long regarded as a shared space visited by both communities, became contested after a temple trust was formed in 2022 and Hindu groups began conducting regular rituals at the structure. This shift altered the previously peaceful understanding around the dargah.

Muslim families allege that loudspeakers were installed, an idol was placed inside the compound and several individuals began restricting their access. They also report vandalism, intimidation and pressure to withdraw from managing the site. These developments triggered police action, with more than 120 people from both communities booked in related cases. A police post has been set up nearby to prevent further escalation.

The conflict has affected everyday life. Parents say their children experienced bullying in school, including coercion to chant religious slogans and, in some cases, physical aggression. Many have shifted their children to distant schools, leading to long travel hours and financial strain. Several Muslim shopkeepers say their customer base has shrunk due to social pressure, and some families have moved out.

Hindu leaders deny an organised boycott and insist that only a few individuals caused disturbances. They argue that the structure is a temple and claim the dispute intensified after Muslims sought Waqf registration. The matter is now before the Bombay High Court, Waqf Tribunal and Charity Commissioner.

Muslim residents continue daily protests demanding restoration of access and a return to earlier harmony. District officials say the situation is stable but under watch.
