Chennai: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), under its nationwide campaign “Save Waqf – Save Constitution”, is set to organize a massive public address in Chennai on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 4 PM, near Raja Ratnam Stadium, Egmore.
The protest gathering comes in the wake of the controversial Waqf Amendment Act 2025 introduced by the Central Government, which AIMPLB has termed a direct threat to the constitutional and religious rights of the Muslim community. According to the organizers, the amendments are part of a larger conspiracy to reduce Indian Muslims to second-class citizens.
The Board asserts that the new legislation blatantly violates multiple constitutional provisions including Articles 14, 15, 25, 26, and 29. These amendments, they argue, not only dismantle the Muslim community’s autonomy over their religious endowments but also undermine the essence of India’s pluralistic democracy.
One of the most contentious provisions in the new law is the mandatory inclusion of non-Muslim members in both the Central and State Waqf Boards, a clause that has not been imposed on the religious bodies of any other community. Moreover, the requirement that a person must be a “practicing Muslim” for at least five years before making a Waqf donation has been labeled discriminatory, unconstitutional, and against Islamic jurisprudence.
Another alarming clause noted by the organizers is the annulment of historical waqf properties known as Waaf by user—properties long used by the Muslim community for religious and charitable purposes. Under the new law, these properties risk being declared invalid, potentially erasing centuries of religious heritage in a single legal stroke.
The Chennai rally will see prominent leaders, MPs who have voiced their opposition in Parliament, and community activists addressing the crowd. The AIMPLB has appealed to the Muslim community to attend the event in large numbers along with their families to raise a unified voice against what it calls a draconian and black law.
This event is being jointly organized by the Tamil Nadu Majlis and Darul Ihsan, based in Choolaimedu, Chenna with Slogans of the event: “Save Waqf, Save Constitution”
“Reclaim Our Rights”
