Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh : In a landmark development, all 38 individuals accused in the 2018 Bulandshahr violence — which led to the brutal killing of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh — have been convicted by a local court. The sentencing is scheduled to be announced on August 1, 2025, as per a report by the New Indian Express.
The incident dates back to December 3, 2018, when a mob of Hindu right-wing activists created a ruckus in the Syana area of Bulandshahr over alleged cow slaughter. Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who was investigating the matter, concluded that the claims were baseless and fabricated.
However, the situation spiraled out of control when the mob turned violent, attacking the police team. Inspector Singh was lynched in broad daylight by the mob. During the chaos, one of the attackers, 20-year-old Sumit, was shot and killed — allegedly by police firing.
In a shocking twist, Sumit was later hailed as a “martyr” by several groups, and his statue was even erected in his hometown. Demands were also raised to grant him official martyrdom status.
Investigations revealed that many of the accused were affiliated with hardline Hindu organizations like Bajrang Dal and similar extremist outfits. A total of 38 people were charged for inciting violence, rioting, and the murder of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh.
The case has been closely watched nationwide due to its communal undertones and the targeting of law enforcement officers. The verdict marks a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for Inspector Singh, whose death had sparked outrage across India.
