Allahabad High Court Reserves Judgment on Shahi Idgah-Krishna Janmasthan Dispute

1 June 2024: The Allahabad High Court has reserved its judgment on the maintainability of multiple cases related to the Shahi Idgah-Krishna Janmasthan dispute in Mathura. These cases seek the removal of the Shahi Idgah mosque, which is adjacent to the Krishna temple. Litigants claim that the mosque was constructed during the reign of Aurangzeb after demolishing a temple.

The legal proceedings have seen arguments from both sides. The plaintiffs argue for the mosque’s removal, while the Muslim side contends that the suits are barred under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991, among other laws. This Act prohibits the conversion of any place of worship and aims to maintain the religious character of such places as they existed on August 15, 1947.

Justice Mayank Kumar Jain presided over the hearing. The outcome of this case is highly anticipated as it could have significant implications for similar disputes across India.
