Allahabad High Court Seeks ASI Report on Renovation of Sambhal Jama Masjid

New Delhi: The Allahabad High Court has directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to submit a report on the renovation and maintenance of the historic Sambhal Jama Masjid. The order comes after ASI objected to a petition filed by the mosque management committee seeking permission for refurbishment, cleaning, and repair work.

ASI contended that the mosque is a protected monument and any renovation must be assessed before approval. In response, the High Court instructed ASI to provide a detailed report on how the restoration work could be carried out without harming the structure. Additionally, a three-member committee—including ASI representatives, a scientific expert, and an administrative officer—has been appointed to inspect the site and assess the feasibility of the requested repairs.

ASI is required to submit its report by Friday, February 28, after which the court will hold a hearing on the matter. The directive was issued by Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal in response to the mosque committee’s plea.

The petition was filed after ASI denied permission for maintenance work ahead of Ramadan. The mosque management committee has emphasized that their request is solely for essential cleaning and repairs, not structural modifications. The court’s decision will determine whether the renovation can proceed.
