Alleged IM operative dies in judicial custody

Hyderabad, July 26:  Syed Maqbool alias Zubair, an alleged operative of banned Indian Mujahideen (IM) who was convicted in terror cases, including 2013 Dilsukhnagar bomb blast, died in judicial custody.

Maqbool (44), a native of Nanded in Maharashtra, died while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. He was shifted to hospital from Cherlapally Central Jail, where he was serving life sentence in Dilsukhnagar blast case.

Maqbool had undergone a heart surgery a month ago and was also suffering from kidney-related ailment.

In October last year, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Delhi had sentenced Maqbool to 10 years in jail for hatching a terror conspiracy. He was later shifted to Cherlapally prison on transit warrant to serve his sentence in connection with cases registered in Telangana.

Maqbool was arrested on February 28, 2013 for his alleged links with members of banned IM based in Pakistan. The terror module had planned a series of attacks across the country, with Hyderabad as one of the primary targets.

The twin blasts in Dilsukhnagar area on February 21, 2013, had killed 18 persons and injured 130 others.
