Bengaluru: Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of Alt News, has filed a formal complaint with the Bengaluru police after his personal information, including his home address and phone number, was leaked on social media. According to a report by The Hindu, this leak has triggered renewed threats to his safety, including threats to send pork to his residence—an act Zubair says is designed to incite religious hatred.
In his complaint, filed on May 13, Zubair accused several unknown individuals of orchestrating this targeted harassment. “This is not the first time such intimidation has happened,” Zubair wrote in a post on X , recalling a similar incident in 2023 when pork was sent to his address and shipping details were shared online. He urged the police to take this current threat seriously.
Zubair also noted that right-wing social media accounts, including one with the handle @Cyber_Huntss, had actively circulated his contact details and encouraged others to send pork to his home. He emphasized that this was a deliberate attempt to deepen communal divisions and demanded police protection.
The fact-checker expressed disappointment that a previous FIR related to the issue had been closed without any substantial action. In light of the persistent threats, Zubair’s new complaint has been submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Division), with renewed hopes that it will be taken up earnestly.
Zubair, known for his work countering misinformation and communal propaganda, has been a frequent target of online abuse. This recent wave of threats follows heightened digital hostility in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing “Operation Sindoor,” both of which have intensified nationalist discourse on social media.
Support for Zubair poured in from netizens, many of whom tagged the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and the Karnataka Director General of Police, urging swift action and security measures for Zubair.
