Amid J&K Terror Attacks, Farooq Abdullah Calls for Dialogue with Pakistan

Srinagar, June 13: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah has called for dialogue with Pakistan in the wake of recent terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that military action cannot resolve the ongoing issues and highlighted the necessity of diplomatic talks.

Three terror attacks have occurred in Jammu and Kashmir over the past four days. The first attack in Reasi resulted in the deaths of nine to ten pilgrims. The second incident was the Kathua terror attack, and the third was an encounter in Doda between terrorists and security forces, injuring five soldiers and a sub-divisional special police officer.

Abdullah expressed concerns about the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, stating that any incident during the pilgrimage could escalate tensions. He drew parallels with the prolonged conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, and Israel and Hamas, noting that military solutions have not ended these disputes.

The NC chief urged for dialogue as the only viable solution, pointing out that the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has also mentioned the need for discussions to resolve border issues, including those with Pakistan. Abdullah stressed the importance of reviving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to foster regional peace.

In response, Jammu and Kashmir BJP president Ravinder Raina criticized Abdullah, arguing that advocating for dialogue with Pakistan, which he holds responsible for sponsoring terrorism in the region, is inappropriate. Raina called for a stronger stance against Pakistan’s actions rather than engaging in talks.

Despite the BJP’s criticism, Abdullah remains firm in his belief that opening channels of communication with Pakistan is essential for long-term peace in the region. He also condemned the attacks on innocent pilgrims, urging unity among the state’s people to denounce such violence.
