Amnesty International has strongly criticised the US Administration for welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
“By hosting Netanyahu, the US shows contempt for international justice,” Amnesty stated, adding that the Biden administration disregarded justice for Palestine. It further criticised President Trump for not arresting Netanyahu or investigating him, instead making him the first foreign leader to visit the White House post-inauguration.
The organisation emphasised that under the Geneva Conventions, the US must prosecute or extradite individuals accused of war crimes, asserting that there must be no “safe haven” for such individuals. It also accused the US of violating its duty to prevent genocide, as US-origin weapons are used in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
Following Netanyahu’s visit, protests erupted near the US Congress, condemning his presence. Meanwhile, Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the US from the UN Human Rights body and cutting funding to UNRWA. On Tuesday, he criticised the UN’s inefficiency, stating it must “get its act together.”
