Aligarh: In response to ongoing student protests over the recent fee-hike, the Academic Council of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in a special online meeting on Thursday, unanimously approved recommendations to limit fee hike up to 20% for continuing students and implement support measures.
Chaired by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon, the Council carefully examined the report of the committee constituted to review students’ concerns regarding the hike. It was clarified that the fee increase for continuing students will not exceed 20% over the previous academic session’s rates, and the revision will be implemented in phases to reduce immediate financial burden.
The Council also recommended special support measures, including fee concessions and instalment facilities for students from economically weaker sections, to be managed by the Dean Students’ Welfare office. Additionally, the University will explore alternative resource-generation avenues, such as alumni contributions, sponsored research projects, weekend use of infrastructure for national-level exams, and optimal use of campus facilities for training and academic programs.
Also, the Vice-Chancellor’s office issued a memo stating that, on student request, a Disciplinary Committee meeting will be convened soon. The memo also confirmed that AMU Students’ Union (AMUSU) elections will be held at an appropriate time, as per Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.
