AMU Celebrates Sporting Spirit and Legacy of Prof. Mohammad Shuaib Zaheer with Memorable Cricket Victory

Aligarh: As a celebration of Aligarh Muslim University’s rich sports culture and commitment to unity and community engagement, the AMU Eleven defeated the District Administration Eleven by three wickets in a spirited memorial cricket match held in honour of the late Prof. Mohammad Shuaib Zaheer (Former Secretary University Games Committee). The match, played at the historic AMU Cricket Pavilion, highlighted the university’s strong sporting ethos and its collaborative spirit with the local administration.

The friendly fixture was not just a contest of cricketing skills, but a tribute to the values of camaraderie, discipline, and communal harmony – ideals deeply cherished by Prof. Zaheer, a revered academic and sports enthusiast.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the District Administration Eleven posted a challenging 169-run total in 20 overs. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Mr. Sanjeev Suman, led with an explosive 72 off 41 balls, supported by Faraaz’s brisk 22 off 10. AMU’s Dr. Arshad Bari impressed with the ball, taking two key wickets and curbing the opposition’s momentum.

In reply, AMU Eleven showcased resilience and composure. Opening batsman Tahmeed Ahmad anchored the chase with a fluent 68 off 40 deliveries, while Mohammad Fazil chipped in with a steady 29 off 21 balls. With nerves of steel, AMU crossed the finish line in the 19.3rd over, clinching a thrilling three-wicket victory.

At the prize distribution ceremony, AMU Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Mohsin Khan, presented trophies to both teams and offered a touching tribute to Prof. Zaheer.

“Prof. Zaheer embodied the values of discipline, education, and harmony. He remains a guiding light for all of us. Today’s match was more than a game – it was a celebration of the ideals he stood for.”

SSP Aligarh, Mr. Sanjeev Suman was named Player of the Match, while Tahmeed Ahmad (AMU) and IPS Mayank Pathak were adjudged Best Batsman and Best Fielder, respectively.

The event was officiated by umpires Ahmed and Shariq, with scoring handled by Areeb and Kirmani. Proceedings were conducted by Mazharul Qamar. Notable guests included former Ranji cricketer Aslam Ali, Saeed, Dr. Qamar Alam, and Imran.

Prof. Syed Amjad Ali Rizvi, Secretary, AMU Games Committee, and senior cricket coach Dr. Faisal Sherwani welcomed the dignitaries, reaffirming AMU’s support for promoting sportsmanship and inter-institutional goodwill.
