AMU Faculty Delivers a Lecture on Sarcopenia at a Conference in Lucknow

Aligarh: Dr. Hamid Ashraf, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, J.N. Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University delivered a lecture on “Sarcopenia: Indian Perspective” at the 20th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR), held in Lucknow.

Dr. Ashraf highlighted the growing prevalence of Sarcopenia in the Indian population and its implications for healthcare. He emphasised the unique socio-demographic and nutritional factors that contribute to high prevalence of Sarcopenic obesity in type 2 diabetes patients in Aligarh and delved into the diagnostic challenges, emerging trends, and tailored strategies to address the condition, particularly in the context of ageing and chronic disease management in the country.

He pointed out that 150 patients with diabetes were included in the study, out of which 66 patients were found to have Sarcopenic obesity. The investigator found a significant association between the duration of diabetes, poor glycemic control, vitamin D deficiency, decreased level of physical activity and Sarcopenic obesity.
