AMU History Department Organizes Sir Syed Lecture Series

Aligarh: The CAS, Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), successfully commenced the second round of the prestigious Sir Syed Lecture Series on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This academic event featured two prominent scholars: Prof. Arshad Islam, former Chairperson of the Department of History at the International Islamic University, Malaysia, and Dr. Abbas Panakkal from the School of History, St. Andrews, UK, and Director of the International Interfaith Harmony Initiative.

Prof. Hassan Imam, Chairperson and Coordinator of CAS, Department of History, presided over the event and inaugurated the second round of lectures. In his opening remarks, Prof. Imam highlighted the department’s achievements and the importance of objective and scientific research in the field of history.

The first day saw Prof. Arshad Islam deliver a lecture on “Multifaith Relationships and Civilization-Building in India’s Muslim States and Societies.” He focused on the harmonious coexistence of various communities during medieval times and emphasized the Islamic principle of adl (justice) as a cornerstone for social equality and fairness.

Dr. Abbas Panakkal spoke on “Musaliar King: Decolonial Historiography of Malabar Resistance,” discussing the colonial narratives surrounding the Malabar resistance of 1921. He explained how his research deconstructs these colonial perspectives and highlighted the unity between Hindus and Muslims in resisting the British rule during that period.

The second day of the series featured Prof. Arshad’s lecture on “Writing Research Proposals for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy.” He shared insights into research ethics practiced at the International Islamic University, Malaysia, and how AMU students could adopt similar standards. Dr. Abbas’s second lecture, “Integration of South Asia and Southeast Asian Cultural Traditions,” focused on the syncretic cultural traditions shaped by the arrival of Islam in both regions.

Prof. Parwez Nazir, convener of the program welcomed and introduced the speaker.

The lectures were attended by faculty, research scholars, and students, promoting intellectual exchange. Dr. Sana Aziz conducted the program, and Dr. Aneesa Iqbal Sabir delivered the vote of thanks.
