Aligarh, April 3: Two engaging lectures were hosted as part of the Sir Syed lecture series at Aligarh Muslim University. Professor Ravindra Kumar Shrivastav, former Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, delivered an enlightening talk titled “Art and Architectural Heritage Theories: Epistemology and Perspective.” He eloquently discussed Sir Syed’s efforts post-1857 revolt to foster pluralism and inclusivity through his scholarly works, notably highlighting his role as a historian and archaeologist, particularly referencing his seminal work, “Asar-us-Sanadid.”
In his second lecture, “Teaching and Researching History in the Digital Age,” Prof. Shrivastav emphasized the democratization of knowledge through digital learning, underscoring the need for teaching to transcend mere information transmission and stimulate critical inquiry among students.
During the event, Professor Hassan Imam, Chairman of the department, emphasized the significance of exploring Sir Syed’s legacy through primary sources, drawing on his own research from the Anarkali Archives in Lahore. He also emphasized the alignment of digital learning with the objectives of the Government of India’s New Education Policy.
The Convener of the lecture series, Professor Parwez Nazir, provided a warm welcome to the guests and highlighted the importance of understanding Sir Syed’s scholarship, particularly through his influential work, “Asar-us-Sanadid,” which has been translated into multiple languages, including French by historian Garcin de Tassy.
Dr. Nazrul Bari delivered introductory remarks before the second lecture by Prof. Shrivastav, discussing the relevance of the theme in the 21st century, characterized by evolving dynamics in the student-teacher relationship in the digital age.
