AMU Hosts Lecture on Mother and Child Care

Aligarh: The Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) hosted a lecture on “Mother and Child Care,” delivered by Prof. S. Manazir Ali from the Department of Paediatrics, J.N. Medical College, AMU.

In his address, Prof. Ali highlighted that approximately 27 million women become pregnant annually in India, with 26 million delivering live babies. He noted the maternal mortality rate stands at 97 per 100,000 live births, while the infant mortality rate is 27.69 per 1,000 live births. Additionally, the neo-natal mortality rate is 24.9 per 1,000 live births, and the under-five mortality rate is 41.9 per 1,000 live births.

Prof. Ali emphasised the benefits of mobility during labour, explaining that movement offers significant advantages, including a more positive birth experience. He also discussed the challenges of managing neonatal jaundice, a common condition, particularly in light of shorter maternity ward stays, which necessitate innovative diagnostic and treatment approaches to prevent readmissions.

Dr. Shamim Akhtar, Director of the Centre, welcomed the guest speaker and concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
