Aligarh: The University Debating and Literary Club (UDLC), Aligarh Muslim University, inaugurated the “AMU Literature Festival 2025” with a grand celebration of literature and ideas, featuring engaging discussions, book releases, and thought-provoking keynote addresses.
The event commenced with an inspiring speech by eminent historian Prof. Irfan Habib from the Department of History, Aligarh Muslim University, who underscored the significance of reason, humanity, and tolerance in literary discourse.
He remarked, “Whatever be our means of communication, whether debates or writing articles, we have a great cause to uphold the cause of reason and humanity.”
Renowned author and screenwriter Prof. Simon Andrew Matthew North addressed the audience on the importance of community engagement in literature festivals, stating, “Storytelling is a moral enterprise at its root and heart.”
Dr. Geetanjali Singh Chanda, Associate Professor of English at Ashoka University, shared insights on the evolution of Indian English Literature and the critical role of Women’s Literature in reflecting diverse societal conditions. Prof. Kamalanand Jha, President, University Drama Club, lauded the AMU Literature Festival as a testament to the university’s secular traditions and cultural vibrancy.
Prof. Mohibul Haque, Mentor, elaborated on the festival’s theme, “Towards an Inclusive Future,” emphasising the diversity of panels and discussions scheduled throughout the event.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Nazia Hasan, President, UDLC, highlighted the relevance of literature and the arts in contemporary society, while the Coordinator of the University Cultural Education Centre, Prof. Mohammed Naved Khan spoke on literature’s role in fostering education and awareness, noting that it nurtures empathy and intellectual growth.
Earlier, welcoming the guest speakers, the Club Secretary, Mohd Shams Uddoha Khan highlighted the salient features of the festival and urged the university students to attend the forthcoming sessions which will cover myriad aspects of literature.
A significant highlight of the event was the release of two books – “Blandine and the Elephant” and “Half a Century of an Incredible Odyssey” by Mr. Arnab Jan Deka. The AMULF-25 Newsletter, “LitLetter,” edited by Ms. Tanya Kainaat and Ms. Zunaira Habib Alvi, was also unveiled on this occasion.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Juveria Rahman, Hospitality Committee In-Charge.
