Aligarh: The Department of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology (ENT), Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised an impactful awareness camp to mark World No Tobacco Day 2025, in line with the global initiative led by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to combat the harmful effects of tobacco use and promote effective control measures.
This year’s WHO theme, “Bright Products, Dark Intentions: Unmasking the Appeal”, highlighted the tobacco industry’s targeted marketing strategies aimed at young consumers. According to WHO, these companies deliberately design and promote products that appeal to the youth, masking the dangerous health consequences behind attractive packaging and advertising.
In his inaugural address, Dr. Aftab Ahmed, Chairperson of the Department, underscored the importance of collective responsibility in addressing tobacco-related health issues, particularly cancers affecting the head and neck regions.
Dr. Mehtab Alam expressed concern over the rising incidence of tobacco-induced cancers in society and emphasised the need for active community participation to curb tobacco use.
Dr. Sadia Islam stressed the importance of implementing strict tobacco control policies and protecting future generations from the manipulative influence of the tobacco industry.
Held at the ENT Outpatient Department (OPD), the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from more than 200 healthcare professionals, medical students, and patients.
