Aligarh: The Department of Community Medicine at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a health awareness programme at the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC) as part of the observance of World No Tobacco Day 2026.
The programme aimed to educate members of the community about the harmful effects of tobacco use and encourage the adoption of tobacco-free lifestyles.
Held under the guidance of Prof. Uzma Eram, Chairperson of the Department of Community Medicine, the event featured a series of talks highlighting the health risks associated with tobacco consumption and the importance of prevention and cessation.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shaista Perveen, Senior Resident, emphasised the significance of World No Tobacco Day and stressed the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to combat tobacco use.
Dr. Riya, Junior Resident, spoke about the serious health consequences of tobacco consumption, including its link to cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders and several other life-threatening conditions. Dr. Rohan Kaushik, Junior Resident, delivered a session on tobacco cessation strategies, preventive measures and the dangers posed by both smoking and smokeless tobacco products.
The programme was attended by Dr. Suboohi Afzal, Lady CMO, UHTC, along with postgraduate students, interns, undergraduate students, Medical Social Workers and staff members of the Urban Health Training Centre.
As part of the event, participants took a No Tobacco pledge, reaffirming their commitment to raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and working towards the creation of a tobacco-free society.
