Aligarh: Prof Mohammad Jahangir Warsi, Chairman, Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University has been honoured with an award from the Urdu Directorate, Cabinet Secretariat Department, Government of Bihar, Patna and District Urdu Language Cell, Darbhanga, for his valuable services in promoting Urdu language and linguistics. He was felicitated with the award at a ceremony by the District Magistrate of Darbhanga, Mr. Rajiv Roshan.
In his address, Prof Warsi said that Urdu is one of the largest spoken languages in the world and the only mediating language to understand the nuances of Islamic civilization, common civilization and history in South Asia.
Prof Warsi has extensively worked on Urdu linguistics and his book, “Maithili Urdu”, is viewed as a fascinating retelling on international level. He has been awarded several international and national awards for his academic and research achievements, including the James McLeod Faculty Award given by the University of Washington.
