Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) made a significant impact at the XXII Annual Conference of the Society of Pharmacovigilance India (SoPICON-2025), held at AIIMS Bhopal from February 5 to 7. The university’s faculty and students actively participated in pre-conference workshops, scientific sessions, and academic competitions, further solidifying AMU’s reputation in pharmacovigilance and drug safety research.
Prof. Dr. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairperson, Department of Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), attended the Conference as the Secretary of the Society of Pharmacovigilance India (SoPI). He played a key role in the scientific proceedings, chairing multiple sessions, including a lecture by Dr. Peter Hjelmström, CEO of the Uppsala Monitoring Centre, Sweden, on “Safer Use of Medicines and Vaccines in the AI Age: Human Insights in an Automated PV World.”
He also delivered a guest lecture, titled “Experiences of an AMC/MDMC – Pharmacovigilance Activities from JNMC,” sharing insights into pharmacovigilance initiatives at AMU.
AMU’s junior residents and research scholars achieved notable accolades at the conference. Dr. Aditya Vikram Singh secured third place in the National Pharmacovigilance Quiz, while Dr. Abhinav Tiwary received an award for his oral presentation on “Evaluation of Antihypertensive Agents in Alzheimer’s Disease: Preclinical Study on Telmisartan and Nifedipine.”
Additionally, Jahangir Alam, a PhD research scholar from AMU, was honoured with the esteemed “SoPI Uppsala Award-2025” for his poster presentation on “Incidence of Adverse Events Following Pacemaker Implantation at a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Materiovigilance Perspective.” His research, conducted under the guidance of Prof. Rahman, was widely appreciated.
Other AMU participants, including Dr Prateek Ganvir, Dr Shariq Azmi, Dr Amrita Kumari Pandey, Dr Puneet Palliwal, and Dr Swathi G., also showcased their expertise in the pharmacovigilance quiz and academic discussions.
The conference gathered leading academicians, researchers, and experts in pharmacovigilance and materiovigilance to discuss advancements in drug safety, the role of artificial intelligence, and real-world challenges in medicine and medical device monitoring. AMU’s active participation highlights its academic and research excellence, strengthening its national and international reputation in pharmacovigilance and healthcare safety.
