Aligarh: A 20 year old final year diploma student of Aligarh Muslim University died inside her hostel room on Monday evening, triggering renewed concern over student safety and mental health support on campus. The student, Insha, studied Computer Science Engineering and stayed at SN Hall.
Family members said she spoke to her father on a video call shortly before the incident. The conversation reportedly turned tense, leading to panic at home. A relative in Aligarh rushed to the hostel after receiving an urgent call from the father, who works in Saudi Arabia.
The hostel room remained locked from inside and repeated calls received no response. University authorities and Civil Lines Police reached the spot. The door was forced open around 7.30 pm. Insha was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a dupatta. She was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College around 8 pm.
Doctors attempted emergency treatment. Medical staff said she arrived in a critical state and showed no response to resuscitation efforts. She was declared dead during treatment.
The university sealed the room and ordered an internal inquiry. Police started formal proceedings to determine the circumstances leading to the death. Officials said family conditions form part of the inquiry, with no final findings yet.
Senior university leaders visited the medical college after the incident and spoke with staff and students.
This death adds to a troubling pattern at the university. On 24 October 2025, an undergraduate student died in a hostel at AMU Women’s College. On 20 February 2025, a first year MA Theology student was found dead in Mumtaz Hostel.
With three student deaths reported within a year, students and families demand stronger counselling systems, early warning mechanisms, and round the clock mental health support on campus.
