Aligarh: Students of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have called on the university administration to redirect funds earmarked for the upcoming Sir Syed Day celebrations towards humanitarian aid for Palestine and Lebanon. The appeal, led by students from Sir Syed Hall and R.M. Hall, was addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, urging that the resources be used to support the basic needs and welfare of civilians affected by ongoing conflicts in the region.
A representative from the student body emphasized the importance of this gesture, saying, “The students of AMU wish to contribute to the relief efforts in Palestine, helping provide essential amenities and support for their livelihood. This would be a meaningful way to honor Sir Syed Ahmed Khan’s legacy of compassion and service to humanity.”
AMU traditionally celebrates Sir Syed Day on October 17 each year to commemorate the birth anniversary of its founder, Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, a renowned Indian reformer and educationist. The university had initially planned a large-scale celebration this year, as announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Naima Khatoon, which was to include the usual events marking the occasion.
The students’ appeal comes against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, where Israeli strikes since October 2023 have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 42,065 people and left over 97,000 injured. Protests against the Israeli offensive have erupted worldwide, with calls for a ceasefire and accountability for war crimes. Universities across the globe, including AMU, have joined the movement in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
