AMU’s Department of Geology celebrates its Foundation Day with Fervour

Aligarh: The Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University, celebrated its 69th Foundation Day, which marked a felicitation ceremony for the successful students and a workshop including lectures by two distinguished academicians, Prof Talat Ahmad, an alumnus of the department and former Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia and the University of Kashmir; and Prof. Vikram Vishal, IIT Bombay.

While addressing the occasion, Prof Talat Ahmad expressed happiness on visiting his alma mater after a long time and shared anecdotes from his student life, highlighting the learning environment of the university. He emphasised the crucial role of teachers in instilling strong fundamental scientific knowledge in students, which he regarded as the foundation of academic and professional success.

Prof. Vikram Vishal said he has always admired AMU as a fountain of knowledge and it was a dream-come-true for him to visit this great seat of learning.

Later, he conducted a workshop on “Geological Resources and Sustainable Development”, where he provided valuable insights into “Future of geosciences in an era of decarbonisation’ and “Fundamentals of reservoir geomechanics,” fostering a deeper understanding of the subject among students and researchers.

In his presidential remarks, the Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Sartaj Tabassum lauded the progress of the department and urged the students to focus on innovative research which is of foundational significance for a professional geologist.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Chairman of the department, Prof. Rashid Umar introduced the guest speakers, Prof. Talat Ahmad and Prof. Vikram Vishal and thanked them for sparing time for this programme.

While conducting the programme, Convener of the Foundation Day Celebrations, Prof. M.E.A. Mondal presented a detailed overview of the history and achievements of the department, highlighting its legacy of academic excellence and contributions to the field of geology.

The students with outstanding achievements during the academic session 2024-25, were felicitated on this occasion.

The Organising Secretary, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad extended a vote of thanks.
