Aligarh: The Centre of Continuing and Adult Education and Extension (CCAEE), Aligarh Muslim University, organised a lecture on “Mother and Child Care” by Prof. S. Manazir Ali from the Department of Paediatrics, J.N. Medical College, AMU.

In his lecture, Prof. Ali shared key insights into maternal and child health in India. He highlighted that approximately 27 million women become pregnant each year, and 26 million give birth to live babies. He noted that the maternal mortality rate stands at 97 per 100,000 live births, the infant mortality rate at 27.69 per 1,000 live births, the neonatal mortality rate at 24.9, and the under-five mortality rate at 41.9 per 1,000 live births.

Prof. Ali emphasised that women in labour have options beyond remaining immobile in a hospital bed, and there are documented advantages of movement during labour, including a more positive birth experience. He also discussed the high prevalence of neonatal jaundice and the growing trend toward shorter postnatal hospital stays, stressing the need for innovative approaches to diagnosis and management to prevent readmissions.

Dr. Shamim Akhtar, Director of the Centre, welcomed the guest speaker and delivered the vote of thanks.
