Aligarh: The Department of Social Work, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in collaboration with the National Centre for Drug Abuse Prevention (NCDAP), National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, successfully conducted a webinar on Understanding Addiction and Peer Pressure. The event targeted undergraduate and postgraduate hostel students of AMU, aiming to raise awareness about substance abuse, its consequences, and preventive strategies.
The distinguished resource person, Dr. Shalini Singh, Associate Professor at the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS, Ghaziabad, provided valuable insights into the psychological, social, and behavioural aspects of addiction. She emphasised the importance of early intervention, peer influence, and community support in preventing substance abuse among students.
Ms Sangeeta Khowal, Consultant at NCDAP, NISD, played a crucial role in organising the event, demonstrating her commitment to student welfare. She highlighted the importance of informed decision-making and awareness regarding drug abuse, ensuring that students are equipped with the necessary knowledge to make responsible choices and prevent substance misuse.
Prof. Naseem Ahmad Khan, Chairperson, Department of Social Work, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, NCDAP, and NISD for their continued collaboration. He stressed the need for regular awareness programmes and student engagement in social responsibility initiatives.
The webinar witnessed enthusiastic participation from hostel students, who actively engaged in discussions, sharing their concerns, and seeking guidance on addiction-related issues. Faculty members of the Department of Social Work also attended and contributed to the discussion.
The webinar concluded with a collective discussion on the importance of continuing such awareness programmes to educate students about the misuse of drugs and its prevention, ensuring a safer and healthier academic environment.
