Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) Telescope Facility, atop the Physics Department, once again enthralled sky watchers with a stunning astronomical event. Following the success of ‘The Planet Parade – 2025,’ this stargazing session on February 2 offered captivating views of the Crescent Moon, its craters, Venus, Jupiter, and Mars. Marking the arrival of spring, a season of growth and renewal in Indian traditions, the event drew a large gathering of students, faculty, and astronomy enthusiasts, who also welcomed distinguished guests.
The event was attended by the guests, including Smt. Medha Roopam, I.A.S., District Magistrate of Kasganj, and Mr. Anek Singh, Sub-District Magistrate of Kasganj. Also in attendance were Mr. Rajeev Agrawal and Dr. Jayant Gupta, Science Coordinators of Aligarh and Kasganj, respectively, along with Dr. Surabhi from Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University, Aligarh, and Dr. Mohsin Khan from Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology, AMU.
Professor Anisul Ain Usmani, Chairman of the Department of Physics, and Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta, In-charge of the Telescope Facility, welcomed the guests. Highlighting the facility’s significance, Professor Usmani remarked, “This telescope is a rare asset in the western region of Uttar Pradesh. We are working towards upgrading it into a full-fledged Optical Observatory, which will advance astrophysical research and provide the public with a gateway to explore the universe. Regular outreach programmes will continue to ignite curiosity and scientific awareness.”
Dr. Sudhir Kumar Gupta announced that the facility will reopen for public viewing on February 22, offering sky enthusiasts an opportunity to observe solar spots, the rare conjunction of Mercury and Saturn, and other fascinating celestial events.
A team including Dr Haris Kunari, Dr. Jane Alam, Dr. Mohd. Adnan, and Dr. Shafiqullah, along with technical and support staff, ensured a seamless experience for visitors.
The Department of Physics at AMU remains committed to fostering scientific temper and awareness, inspiring future generations to look up, explore, and dream beyond the stars.
