New Delhi: The Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR) held a meeting with the Registrar (Law) of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday, to raise urgent concerns over the recent outbreak of violence in Kadamtala, North Tripura. Between October 6 and 9, the area was rocked by incidents of mob violence, arson, looting, and the tragic killing of local resident Alfesani, leaving the Muslim community in shock and fear.
Despite prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and the presence of security forces, the violence persisted for several days, targeting Muslim homes, businesses, and religious institutions. The affected community remains deeply unsettled, especially as reports suggest that some of the attackers were brought in from outside the area.
APCR delegation met with Shri Joginder Singh, Registrar (Law), who assured the team that appropriate action would be taken. The APCR urged NHRC to conduct an immediate spot inquiry to thoroughly investigate the incidents and hold the culprits accountable.
In its appeal, APCR made the following demands:
- Immediate Investigation: A spot inquiry by NHRC to investigate the violence and the extent of the damage.
- Accountability from Authorities: A formal notice to the Superintendent of Police (SP) and District Magistrate (DM) of Tripura to explain how such extensive violence occurred despite police presence, curfew, and prohibitory orders being in place.
- Compensation for Victims: Adequate financial compensation for those affected by the violence, including victims’ families and those whose homes and businesses were destroyed.
As the festival season approaches with Durga Puja and Dussehra, the situation in Kadamtala is slowly stabilizing. However, APCR remains committed to pursuing justice and ensuring that victims are fairly compensated for their losses.
The organization reiterated that the struggle for justice and accountability continues, and the rights of the affected community must be upheld.
