Arab League Launches Arab Common Electricity Market to Boost Regional Energy Cooperation

Abu Dhabi: The Arab League has announced the launch of the Arab Common Electricity Market, a landmark initiative aimed at promoting regional integration in the electricity sector. The announcement was made during the 15th session of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity, held in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital.

The meeting, attended by energy ministers and delegations from 22 Arab nations, saw the signing of two key agreements: the “General Agreement,” outlining the market’s objectives and development mechanisms, and the “Market Agreement,” which establishes the institutional and commercial framework for governance and inter-state cooperation. Signatories include the UAE, Kuwait, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, Morocco, and Jordan.

The initiative seeks to stabilise electricity supplies, lower costs, and promote renewable energy investments. It also aims to position Arab countries as global leaders in clean energy exports, improve energy efficiency, and support developmental projects aligned with national energy strategies. This step is expected to strengthen economic ties among member states and contribute to sustainable growth across the region.
