Madani Says Muslims Need No Certificate Of Patriotism Amid Vande Mataram Debate

New Delhi: Jamiat Ulama i Hind chief Arshad Madani responded to the renewed debate on Vande Mataram by stating that Muslims need no validation of their patriotism. His remarks came as the Lok Sabha marked 150 years of the national song, a discussion that triggered sharp political exchanges.

Madani said Muslims have no objection to anyone choosing to recite Vande Mataram. He explained that the issue lies in the meaning of the verses, which he said conflict with Islamic monotheism. He noted that the song likens the homeland to a deity in its early verses and uses language associated with worship. He said this stands at odds with the basic belief of worshipping only one Allah.

He stressed that no one should be compelled to recite any song that contradicts their faith. He referred to constitutional protections that guarantee freedom of religion under Article 25 and freedom of expression under Article 19. He said these rights protect citizens from forced participation in any expression that violates their conscience.

Madani added that Muslim patriotism stands on firm historical ground. He said the record of Muslim contributions to India’s freedom struggle speaks for itself. He stated that Muslims love their country, while their worship is reserved for Allah alone. He said they bow before none other than God and would never accept polytheism.

The wider parliamentary debate on Vande Mataram has seen BJP and Congress MPs clash. Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised the Congress for what he called appeasement politics. He also accused former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru of altering the song under pressure during the freedom movement.
