Arunachal Muslim Leaders Reject Claims of Illegal Madrasas and Mosques

Itanagar: Leaders of the Muslim community in Arunachal Pradesh rejected recent claims about so-called illegal madrasas and unauthorised mosques in the state. They said all Muslim institutions follow legal procedures and urged authorities to prevent misinformation from spreading.

At a press briefing at the Arunachal Press Club, Gayah Limpiya Sultan, Public Relations Officer of Capital Jamia Masjid, said the allegations have no basis. He said Muslims in the state follow the law and that no evidence supports claims of illegal madrasas or unauthorised mosque construction. He also underlined that the debate on illegal immigration should not be mixed with the activities of local Muslims.

Sultan said every madrasa and mosque under question holds proper documents and approvals. He warned that false claims risk damaging the long-standing harmony between local communities and Muslims. He appealed to citizens, institutions and civil society groups to avoid statements that encourage tension or misunderstanding.

The controversy began after the Arunachal Pradesh Indigenous Youth Organisation raised concerns about some religious structures in the Itanagar Capital Region. Its president, Taru Sonam Liak, said the group was highlighting issues related to illegal immigrants and construction. He said his campaign does not target any religion. He also said he received threatening calls and has filed a complaint. The matter remains under government review.

No authority has confirmed any illegal construction of a mosque or madrasa in the state. Muslim leaders said transparent procedures should guide every inquiry. They said Muslims in Arunachal Pradesh value law, peace and brotherhood, and that maintaining a calm environment is a shared responsibility.
