16 August 2024: Renowned author and political activist Arundhati Roy has been named one of the two recipients of the prestigious 2024 ‘Disturbing the Peace’ Award, bestowed by the United States-based non-profit organization, Vaclav Havel Center. The award, which honors individuals who bravely stand up for human rights, will also be shared with Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, known for his outspoken criticism of political repression in Iran, reported the Scroll.
Salil Tripathi, a member of the award jury, highlighted Roy’s relentless advocacy for India’s marginalized and dispossessed communities. Tripathi noted that Roy’s work gives voice to those affected by land seizures for corporate interests, opponents of India’s nuclear policies, advocates for Dalit rights, and those striving for self-determination. He praised Roy for her commitment to afflicting the comfortable while offering solace to the afflicted.
The Vaclav Havel Center, named after the celebrated author and former President of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, annually presents the award to a “courageous dissenter.” Alongside the honor, the award includes a cash prize of $5,000 (approximately Rs 4.19 lakh) and aims to spotlight global writers who courageously confront human rights abuses.
This recognition adds to Roy’s illustrious list of accolades. In June, she was also announced as the winner of the 2024 PEN Pinter Prize, an award established in memory of Nobel laureate playwright Harold Pinter. She is set to receive the PEN Pinter Prize on October 10 in a ceremony co-hosted by the British Library.
Arundhati Roy’s consistent dedication to social justice and human rights continues to inspire and challenge global audiences, affirming her position as one of the most influential voices in contemporary literature and activism.
