Hyderabad: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has been appointed as a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to examine three controversial bills that seek to remove any minister, chief minister, or the prime minister from office if they remain under arrest for 30 consecutive days for offences carrying a minimum punishment of five years.
The Lok Sabha Bulletin released on November 12 confirmed Owaisi’s inclusion in the 31-member committee, chaired by Lok Sabha MP Aparajita Sarangi. The committee will review The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, and The Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill.
The bills, introduced in the Monsoon Session by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, drew sharp criticism from the Opposition, which accused the government of attempting to centralize power and weaken democratic processes.
Owaisi had strongly opposed the proposed legislation during the debate, describing it as “anti-constitutional” and warning that it would push India toward authoritarian rule. “This government is bent on creating a police state. It violates the right to choose a government and undermines the foundation of democracy,” he stated in Parliament.
The JPC’s review is expected to be one of the key discussions in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, scheduled between December 1 and December 19.
