The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has extended financial support of ₹25 lakh to the family of Mridul Islam, a party worker who tragically lost his life during a protest march.
The incident occurred during the ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo’ protest organised by the APCC, which turned violent following police intervention. Mridul Islam succumbed to injuries after being hit by a tear gas shell, according to reports.
APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah has urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to offer a “suitable job” to Islam’s widow. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Borah emphasised the need for adequate support for the bereaved family.
Mridul Islam, an advocate by profession, died shortly after participating in the protest on Wednesday. The Congress alleged his death was caused by the “excessive and indiscriminate” use of tear gas by the police.
“The martyrdom of Mridul Islam underscores the extent to which this regime will go to suppress dissent. We will not rest until justice is delivered to his family and those responsible are held accountable,” Borah stated in a statement.
