Guwahati: Assam recorded a voter turnout of 85.21 percent in Assembly elections held across all 126 constituencies, exceeding the 82.04 percent turnout in 2021. Voting took place at 31,490 polling stations across 35 districts, with 722 candidates contesting in a single phase.
Despite strong participation, concerns over disenfranchisement emerged from Dimoria constituency. Bengali Muslim families evicted from Kachutoli reached polling stations to vote, yet officials denied them entry after their names were removed from electoral rolls following eviction. The incident has raised questions about access to voting rights for displaced communities.
Authorities reported poll related violence in parts of the state, with around 30 people injured and seven arrests made.
The election remains a contest between the BJP led ruling alliance and the Congress led opposition bloc, while the All India United Democratic Front is contesting separately.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi praised voter turnout and said people voted with hope for new leadership. He urged the Election Commission to ensure secure handling of voting machines and accurate counting.
AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal pointed to strong support for his party across the state and called on voters to back his agenda on justice, education, and technology.
Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi criticised the state government, alleging threats to democratic processes.
Counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, as concerns over voter exclusion continue alongside high electoral participation.
