22 May 2024: The Assam government has once again stirred controversy by evicting approximately 400 Bengali-origin Muslim families from their makeshift homes near the greater Dhalpur Char, situated in the middle of the Brahmaputra river in Sipajhar, Darrang district. This recent move follows a violent eviction drive in September 2021, during which government estimates reported the demolition of 1,418 houses, 48 shops, and three mosques, rendering an estimated 7,000 people homeless.
Residents, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that vacation notices were issued on Saturday, and by Monday, their homes were razed to the ground, leaving them with nowhere to go.
The evictions have drawn criticism from various quarters, with human rights organizations condemning the actions as unlawful demolitions targeting the Muslim community. This incident adds to the ongoing debate surrounding the treatment of minority communities in India, particularly in states like Assam, where issues of citizenship and identity have been contentious.
