Assam Police arrested All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam on April 24, 2025, for making controversial remarks regarding the Pahalgam terror attack. Islam, representing the Dhing constituency, allegedly suggested that the attack was part of a government conspiracy, drawing parallels with the 2019 Pulwama incident. These statements, widely circulated on social media, led to his arrest under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for promoting enmity and criminal conspiracy, reported the Madhyamam.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned Islam’s comments, stating that defending or justifying Pakistan-sponsored terror attacks undermines national integrity. He emphasized that such actions are not protected under freedom of expression.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, the Indian government suspended visa services for Pakistani nationals and revoked existing visas, except for medical visas valid until April 29, 2025. An all-party meeting was convened to discuss the incident, which resulted in 26 fatalities.
